Vernon's Bio

Vernon H. Taylor, born in rural Georgia, embarked on a remarkable journey that led him to become a distinguished figure in the field of military education and workforce development. Adopted by Mr. Clifford and Frances Taylor at the age of 2, he officially became Vernon H. Taylor, eventually carving a path marked by dedication, leadership, and transformative initiatives.

Vernon’s early education took place at the Atkinson Training School, an all-black primary and secondary institution. At 18, he joined the U.S. Army, serving three years in Germany. Leveraging his GI Bill benefits, he pursued degrees in Law Enforcement, Business Management, and Social Science from the University of Maryland, later earning a graduate degree in Guidance Counseling from Boston University.

His diverse career within the military education landscape included roles such as President of Workforce Training & Education, Learning Center Director, Equal Employment Opportunity Counselor, and more. Notably, he served as the Director of Off Duty Voluntary Education at Headquarters, U.S. Marine Corps, overseeing academic and transition programs worldwide for over 186,000 Marines and their families.

Vernon’s contributions extended to pioneering initiatives, including the creation of the Sailor-Marine American Council on Education Registry Transcript (SMART), now the Joint Services Transcript (JST). This transcript facilitates the recognition of military training and occupational experience for college credit.

His leadership extended to revamping the Navy Apprenticeship Program, renamed the United Services Military Apprenticeship Program (USMAP), in partnership with the U.S. Department of Labor. As the Associate Vice President of Military Programs for National University, he played a pivotal role in expanding military student enrollment and enhancing student services.

A proud Army Veteran with 43 years of dedicated service, Vernon Taylor embodies a commitment to giving back. As the President of Vernon Taylor Enterprise Alliance (VTEA), he focuses on bridging the gap between education, training, and industry needs. VTEA is dedicated to uniting partners and aligning efforts to advance social and economic progress through a strengthened education and workforce ecosystem.

Vernon has received notable accolades, including the John Brian Service and Leadership Award (2007), the Tilton Davis Jr. “Military Educator of the Year” Award (2010), and the Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018. In 2022, he was honored with the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Maryland Global Campus.

Today, as the President of VTEA, Vernon H. Taylor continues to shape the future of education and workforce development, leaving an indelible mark on the lives of those he serves.
